What is TNR and Why it Matters

Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR) is the nationally recognized, humane approach to managing community cat populations. It is supported by veterinarians, animal welfare organizations, and municipalities across the country.

Through TNR, unowned outdoor cats are:

  • Humanely trapped

  • Spayed or neutered by a licensed veterinarian

  • Vaccinated

  • Returned to their original outdoor home

Once cats are fixed, they can no longer reproduce, which stabilizes and gradually reduces colony size over time.

Why TNR matters

Neutered cats:

  • Are healthier and live longer

  • Fight less and make less noise

  • Roam less and spray far less often

Just as importantly, TNR prevents the constant cycle of new kittens, which is the root cause of most community cat concerns.

Why cats are returned

Community cats are territorial. Removing them often creates a “vacuum effect,” where new unfixed cats move in and restart the cycle. Returning fixed cats helps protect the area from new, unfixed cats while keeping the population stable.

At Addison Cat Crew, we use TNR as the foundation of our care because it is humane, effective, and proven to work long-term.
